Preparing for Barebow Competition

By Mark V. Lonsdale

With all the cancelled competitions and limited activities brought on by the COVID pandemic, at least we have time to practice and get our gear tuned up for the 2021 season.

I’m currently breaking in a new rig including a Hoyt Xceed with Velos limbs and Easton tapered RX7-23 shafts. This is also my first experience with 3-under shooting.

Hoyt Xceed riser with Hoyt Velos limbs.
Running the Beiter plunger and Zniper arrow rest
Establishing crawl points at various ranges, beginning at 15 yards, but most of my shooting will be at 20 yards in preparation for the indoor Vegas Shoot.

As with any training program, it is important to begin slowly and gradually increase training time and arrow count to avoid sports injuries. Archery is one of those sports where “too much too soon” can result in painful tendon injuries similar to tennis elbow.
